    ABSTRACT

A phytochemical investigation of the aerial parts of Linum tauricum ssp. bulgaricum (Linaceae) led to the isolation of five lignans using semi-preparative HPLC. LC-MS and NMR studies were used to characterize the structures of the isolated compounds. This is the first report of podophyllotoxin, 4′-demethylpodophyllotoxin, 4′-demethyl-6-methoxypodophyllotoxin and isolariciresinol in L. tauricum. Thus, the combination of semi-preparative HPLC, LC-MS and NMR techniques represents a powerful tool for unraveling the structure of naturally occurring lignans.
