ABSTRACT
Background: The genus Cissus (Vitaceae) is known for its medicinal properties. Cissus quadrangularis is a well-known medicinal plant, but other species are less explored. Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of Cissus arnottiana. Materials and Methods: The antioxidant activity was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide, and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using the protein denaturation inhibition assay. Results: The methanolic extract of C. arnottiana showed significant antioxidant activity in all the tested models. The extract also showed significant anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting protein denaturation. Conclusion: C. arnottiana possesses significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, which could be attributed to the presence of phytochemicals such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds.
