ABSTRACT
Background: The present study was aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of the methanolic extract of <em>Cissus quadrangularis</em> (MECQ) in experimental animal models. Materials and Methods: The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and cotton pellet granuloma models. The analgesic activity was evaluated using acetic acid-induced writhing and tail-flick models in mice. Results: MECQ (200 and 400 mg/kg) showed significant (P < 0.01) anti-inflammatory activity in both acute and chronic models. In the analgesic models, MECQ showed significant (P < 0.01) reduction in the number of writhes and increased the reaction time in the tail-flick model. Conclusion: The results suggest that MECQ possesses significant anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities, which supports its traditional use in the treatment of inflammatory conditions and pain.
