    ABSTRACT

    Background: The genus <em>Cissus</em> (Vitaceae) is known for its medicinal properties. <em>Cissus quadrangularis</em> is the most studied species, but other species like <em>Cissus vitiginea</em> L. also possess pharmacological potential. Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-arthritic activities of the methanolic extract of <em>Cissus vitiginea</em> (MECV) leaves. Materials and Methods: The antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH, hydroxyl radical, and superoxide radical scavenging assays. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using the carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model. The anti-arthritic activity was assessed using the adjuvant-induced arthritis model in rats. Results: MECV showed significant antioxidant activity in a dose-dependent manner. In the carrageenan-induced paw edema model, MECV (200 and 400 mg/kg) significantly reduced paw edema. In the adjuvant-induced arthritis model, MECV treatment significantly reduced the paw volume and improved the hematological parameters compared to the arthritic control group. Conclusion: The results suggest that <em>Cissus vitiginea</em> possesses significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-arthritic activities, which could be attributed to the presence of phytochemicals like flavonoids and phenolic compounds.
